London, March 26: Britain’s Prince Harry said he was “in shock” after stepping down as a patron of Sentebale, the charity he co-founded to support young people with HIV and AIDS in Lesotho and Botswana. His departure follows a dispute between the board of trustees and chair Sophie Chandauka, who is now taking legal action to retain her position.
Prince Harry, who co-founded Sentebale in 2006 with Prince Seeiso of Lesotho in honor of his late mother, Princess Diana, expressed deep disappointment over the situation. “It is devastating that the relationship between the charity’s trustees and the chair of the board broke down beyond repair, creating an untenable situation,” Harry and Seeiso said in a joint statement published by Sky News on Wednesday.
The disagreement led to both Harry and Seeiso, along with the board of trustees, resigning from the organization. The trustees asserted they acted in the charity’s best interests by requesting the chair to step down. However, Chandauka has challenged this decision legally.
Despite his departure, Prince Harry reaffirmed his commitment to Sentebale’s mission. “Although we may no longer be patrons, we will always be its founders, and we will never forget what this charity is capable of achieving when it is in the right care,” the statement added.
Harry, who resides in California with his wife Meghan Markle and their two children, stepped back from royal duties in 2020. He has maintained a strong connection with Africa, a region where he has been actively involved in humanitarian efforts for years.
