Brussels, 29 March: A nationwide general strike in Belgium on 31 March will bring the country to a near standstill, causing widespread travel chaos, particularly at Brussels Airport (BRU) and Charleroi Airport (CRL). The strike, organized by major trade unions FGTB/ABVV and CSC/ACV, is in response to the Federal Government’s proposed budget cuts, pension reforms, and labour market changes, which unions argue disproportionately impact the working class and pensioners.

Brussels Airport Operations Halted

Brussels Airport (BRU), Belgium’s largest international hub, has announced the cancellation of all 244 scheduled departures on 31 March due to the strike. Essential staff, including ground crew and security personnel, will walk out, making normal airport operations impossible. Inbound flights will also face severe disruptions. Airport authorities have urged passengers not to come to BRU on Monday and to check directly with airlines for updates.

Brussels Airlines, the national carrier, confirmed that nearly all 200 scheduled flights would be cancelled, except for a few inbound flights from Germany, Italy, and Spain. Meanwhile, TUI Fly is exploring options to reroute some flights through alternative airports in Belgium or neighbouring countries.

Wider Disruptions Across Belgium

The strike extends beyond aviation, affecting public transport, education, and public services. Public transport networks in Brussels, Antwerp, and other major cities are expected to face significant delays or cancellations, with train, tram, and bus services operating at minimal capacity. Eurostar and Thalys train services may also experience disruptions.

Teachers’ unions are participating in the strike, with picket lines anticipated at schools and business parks across the country. Various government offices and public service institutions will also be affected.

Union Demands and Public Reaction

Unions argue that the proposed austerity measures unfairly target vulnerable communities while offering little accountability for wealthier individuals and corporations. They are calling for fairer economic policies that protect workers and pensioners from financial hardship.

Travellers and commuters are urged to monitor the situation closely and seek alternative travel arrangements where possible. Those affected by flight cancellations should check with their airlines for rebooking options or refunds.

The 31 March strike is expected to be one of Belgium’s largest in recent years, reflecting widespread dissatisfaction with government policies and the growing strength of the labour movement in the country.
