April 2025 — In a significant shift in Europe’s defense strategy, Poland has formally requested France to deploy nuclear weapons on its territory, while the United Kingdom has announced plans to enhance domestic production of military-grade explosives and missile propellants.

Polish President Andrzej Duda stated that the presence of French nuclear weapons on Polish soil would serve as a critical deterrent against potential aggression from Russia. “We believe that such a move would significantly bolster our security and that of the region,” Duda said, underscoring growing concerns over Russia’s military posture in Eastern Europe.

This request comes just weeks after Poland made a similar appeal to the United States, asking Washington to consider stationing American nuclear arms in Poland—a request that has not yet been publicly addressed by U.S. authorities.

Meanwhile, the United Kingdom is taking steps to reduce its reliance on foreign arms supplies by boosting its own defense manufacturing capabilities. London has revealed plans to domestically produce RDX (an essential component in high explosives) and propellants used in missile systems, which until now had been largely imported from allies such as France and the U.S.

The move is part of a broader push for defense self-reliance amid rising global tensions and shifting alliances. UK officials say the aim is to secure a more resilient supply chain and strengthen national security.

The developments have drawn sharp criticism from Russia. The Kremlin warned that the deployment of NATO nuclear weapons in Poland would be seen as a direct threat and could escalate tensions to unprecedented levels. Russian officials have even gone as far as to claim such actions could set the stage for World War III, highlighting the high stakes of this geopolitical standoff.

These moves reflect a broader militarization trend within Europe, as NATO allies respond to growing threats on the continent’s eastern flank. As tensions continue to mount, all eyes are on how France, the U.S., and NATO at large will respond to Poland’s latest request.
