On Thursday, Switzerland’s foreign ministry announced that it will donate CHF39 million to support several United Nations (UN) programs that focus on helping children, women, and family health around the world.
A large part of this money, CHF13 million, will go to UNICEF, the UN organization that works for children’s rights. UNICEF makes children’s lives better through provision of education, health care, and protection in conflict-torn, impoverished, or affected-by-disasters societies.
ANOTHER CHF11.5 million will also be given to UN Women to push gender parity and the elevation of women. This institution is involved in making legal reforms and ensuring women have equal access to employment and equitable pay. The funding will assist in stopping gender-based violence and enhancing women’s rights.
UNFPA (United Nations Population Fund) will be provided with CHF14.5 million to sustain its activities in family planning, maternal health, and combating gender-based violence.UNFPA helps provide better healthcare for mothers and ensures that women have the right to make decisions about their bodies and health.
These donations are part of a larger package that includes CHF282 million recently approved by the Swiss government for other UN organizations and the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC). The CHF39 million for UNICEF, UN Women, and UNFPA will come from Switzerland’s budget for international cooperation for the years 2025 to 2028.
Switzerland’s Foreign Minister Ignazio Cassis approved the funding, emphasizing that the country is committed to helping improve global well-being, especially in crisis areas. “We want to make sure that our contributions are used effectively in regions that need the most help,” said Cassis.
Switzerland’s donations are part of a larger plan for achieving its objectives for international development. The country wants to support organizations that are involved in International Geneva, a city with many of the most important UN agencies and organizations. With these funds, Switzerland wants to help make the world a better place, humanitarian assistance, human rights, and gender equality being the primary focus.
