French President Emmanuel Macron called for a new coalition between European and Asian countries to maintain strategic independence during the Shangri-La Dialogue held by the International Institute of Strategic Studies (IISS) in Singapore. In his keynote speech on Friday night, Macron emphasized the importance of preserving autonomy without being forced to choose sides between the United States and China.
He warned that if Russia’s invasion of Ukraine goes unchecked, similar conflicts could threaten Taiwan and the Philippines. Macron highlighted France’s significant presence in the Indo-Pacific region, due to its overseas territories and more than 8,000 kilometers of coastline.
Macron proposed that European and Asian nations unite as independent partners to:
- Preserve peace
- Avoid being drawn into major power rivalries
This call for an independent coalition reflects growing concerns about global tensions and the importance of establishing new partnerships beyond traditional alliances.
