At the International Institute of Strategic Studies (IISS) Shangri-La Dialogue held in Singapore, French President Emmanuel Macron called for a new coalition between European and Asian countries. Speaking on Friday night, Macron emphasized the need for these nations to work together as independent countries to maintain their strategic autonomy.
He warned against being forced to choose sides between the United States and China. Macron highlighted the dangers of allowing Russia to control parts of Ukraine, suggesting it could set a precedent leading to conflicts in Taiwan and the Philippines.
While representing a European nation, Macron also reminded the audience that France has significant Indo-Pacific interests, including:
- Several overseas territories
- A presence of over 8,000 military personnel in the region
His remarks stressed the importance of a balanced and independent coalition to address rising geopolitical challenges. Macron’s vision aims to strengthen cooperation without dependency on major powers, promoting peace and stability across Europe and Asia.
The speech was a key moment in the annual Shangri-La Dialogue, signaling France’s commitment to global strategic autonomy.
