French President Emmanuel Macron has urged European and Asian countries to establish an independent coalition to protect their strategic autonomy. Speaking at the International Institute of Strategic Studies (IISS) annual Shangri-La Dialogue in Singapore, Macron stressed the importance of avoiding a forced choice between aligning with the United States or China.

He expressed concerns about the ramifications of Russia’s annexation of parts of Ukraine, warning that it could potentially lead to similar conflicts in regions such as Taiwan and the Philippines. Macron highlighted France’s distinctive position as a European nation with significant involvement in the Indo-Pacific through its overseas territories and military presence.

The president’s call aims to:

  • Enhance cooperation among independent nations
  • Maintain regional stability
  • Avoid dominance by major powers in global hotspots

Macron’s proposal comes at a time of escalating tensions worldwide and growing geopolitical competition between China and the US. It emphasizes the importance of strategic partnerships that honor autonomy and sovereignty across two continents.
