Paris, France – Anne-Marie Descôtes, secretary general of the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs, has voiced her concerns over the increasing use of tariffs as a political tool, describing it as counterproductive in the current global economic climate. Speaking at a press event on September 29, 2025, Descôtes emphasized the negative impact that the instrumentalisation of tariffs can have on international trade relations.

Descôtes highlighted that using tariffs as leverage in diplomatic disputes often harms both the imposing and targeted countries, disrupting supply chains and increasing costs for businesses and consumers. “Tariffs should not be employed as a weapon but as a means to facilitate fair trade,” she stated. Her remarks come amid growing tensions in global trade, where several countries have resorted to protectionist measures.

The French diplomat is currently on an official visit to New Delhi, India, where she is leading discussions aimed at enhancing bilateral cooperation between France and India. A key focus of her visit is advancing civil nuclear cooperation between the two nations, which she described as a central objective.

“Strengthening civil nuclear partnerships aligns with our shared goals for clean energy and sustainable development,” Descôtes explained. This collaboration is expected to boost energy security and technological exchange, providing new opportunities for economic growth in both countries.

During her time in India, Descôtes is also set to engage with government officials and business leaders to discuss trade, investment, and cultural exchange initiatives that could further solidify French-Indian relations. The visit underscores France’s commitment to deepening ties with India and fostering cooperation in strategic sectors.

The French government has repeatedly expressed its support for multilateral trade agreements and opposes unilateral tariff measures. Descôtes’ comments reinforce France’s stance on promoting open markets and dialogue to resolve trade disputes.

As global economic dynamics shift, France advocates for collaboration over confrontation in international trade policies. Descôtes concluded her statement with a call for constructive engagement among nations to ensure a stable and prosperous global economic framework.
