The European Union and Egypt are poised to launch new scientific cooperation programmes, marking an important advancement in their two-decade partnership. EU Ambassador Angelina Eichhorst recently underscored the significance of this collaboration during an event celebrating 20 years of scientific ties between the two regions.

The Ambassador highlighted the milestone as evidence of a deep, purposeful, and lasting bond between the EU and Egypt. This partnership began with the signing of the EU-Egypt Science and Technology Cooperation Agreement twenty years ago, aimed at promoting scientific exchange, innovation, and joint research projects.

Over the past 20 years, the cooperation has supported numerous initiatives that:

  • Engage Egyptian and European scientists to tackle pressing issues such as climate change, public health, renewable energy, and sustainable agriculture
  • Advance scientific knowledge
  • Contribute to economic and social development in both Egypt and Europe

The forthcoming programmes will build upon this foundation by introducing:

  1. New funding opportunities
  2. Enhanced frameworks for research collaboration
  3. Improved mechanisms for knowledge transfer between institutions

Key focus areas include advanced research technologies, digital innovation, and capacity building within scientific communities. Ambassador Eichhorst also emphasized that these initiatives will provide opportunities for young researchers and innovators to participate in international projects, further integrating Egypt into the European Research Area.

Additionally, the cooperation will strengthen educational and training ties, promoting:

  • Student and academic exchanges
  • Development of future-oriented skills
  • Cross-cultural understanding

The event featured participation from leading scientists, policymakers, and institutional representatives from both Egypt and Europe, demonstrating broad support for ongoing collaborative efforts.

This recommitment to scientific cooperation highlights the shared goal of addressing global challenges through joint research and innovation. The European Union continues to be a dedicated partner in supporting Egypt’s scientific ecosystem and driving progress beneficial to both regions.
