Europe’s Largest Offshore Wind Farm Starts Powering Millions in Poland

Spread the love

Europe’s largest offshore wind farm, the Baltic Breeze Wind Farm, has commenced operations, marking a major advancement in Poland’s transition to renewable energy. Located 30 kilometers off the coast of Gdańsk in the Baltic Sea, it began producing electricity on April 20, 2024.

Key Features of the Baltic Breeze Wind Farm

  • Comprises 150 turbines, each 200 meters tall
  • Total capacity of 1.2 gigawatts
  • Can power roughly two million households annually
  • Includes an advanced underwater cable system for efficient energy transmission to the mainland

Construction and Workforce

The construction phase spanned three years and involved over 5,000 workers at its peak. The turbines were assembled on special vessels and anchored deep into the seabed to ensure stability and efficiency.

Environmental and Economic Impact

The project is expected to:

  1. Reduce carbon dioxide emissions by approximately 2.5 million tons per year, helping Poland decrease its reliance on coal, which still accounts for about 70% of its electricity production.
  2. Improve air quality and contribute to combating climate change.
  3. Boost the local economy by creating new jobs in maintenance, operation, and support services.

Environmental monitoring and protection measures have been implemented to address concerns from local communities, particularly regarding fishing and marine life.

Government and Expert Perspectives

Energy Minister Anna Kowalska emphasized the importance of this milestone in Poland’s clean energy journey and expressed plans to expand offshore wind capacity over the next decade. Meanwhile, experts regard offshore wind farms such as Baltic Breeze as critical to achieving the European Union’s goal of sourcing 40% of total energy consumption from renewable sources by 2030.

This development not only signals a cleaner, greener future for Poland but also serves as a model for sustainable energy projects across Europe.
