At a time when media houses worldwide are clashing with artificial intelligence (AI) platforms over content ownership, an Italian daily has taken an unprecedented leap. Il Foglio, a conservative-liberal newspaper, has become the first publication in Italy to release an edition entirely produced by AI. This bold experiment aims to explore the role of AI in journalism and its impact on daily life.

The four-page AI-generated broadsheet was made available on newsstands and online starting Tuesday. From article writing to crafting headlines, every aspect of this edition is handled by AI. Editor Claudio Cerasa confirmed that journalists only played the role of posing questions to the AI and reviewing its responses.

A Glimpse into AI-Powered Journalism

Cerasa emphasized that this initiative is not just an exercise in automation but a demonstration of AI’s capabilities and limitations. While the AI-generated edition features structured, error-free articles, it notably lacks human quotes and firsthand perspectives.

The first edition includes pieces on global political figures such as US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin, alongside economic analyses of Italy. It also explores contemporary social trends, such as young Europeans’ reluctance to enter committed relationships. Interestingly, even the letters to the editor were AI-generated, with one inquiry humorously questioning whether AI will render humans “useless.”

In response, AI acknowledged its limitations, stating, “AI is a great innovation, but it doesn’t yet know how to order a coffee without getting the sugar wrong.”

The Legacy of Il Foglio

Founded in 1996 by Giuliano Ferrara, Il Foglio is known for its unique blend of conservative political and liberal economic perspectives. Ferrara, once a far-left advocate, transitioned to neoconservatism and served as a government spokesman under former Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi in 1994. Despite Ferrara’s strong right-leaning stance, Il Foglio has historically welcomed a diversity of voices, including left-leaning journalists like Adriano Sofri.

Since 2015, Claudio Cerasa has been at the helm, steering the newspaper toward new journalistic frontiers. With this AI experiment, he hopes to spark a broader conversation about the evolving role of AI in media.

The Future of AI in Newsrooms

While AI’s growing influence in journalism is undeniable, questions remain about its ethical implications and impact on human reporters. Can AI truly capture the nuance, emotion, and investigative rigor that define great journalism? For now, Il Foglio’s experiment is a compelling glimpse into a future where AI and human intelligence may need to collaborate rather than compete.
