ROME – Italy has pledged €68 million ($73.2 million) to fund humanitarian projects and infrastructure reconstruction in Syria, as part of international efforts to assist the country’s transition following recent political changes.

Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani announced the aid package during a parliamentary hearing on Thursday, emphasizing the importance of supporting humanitarian efforts, healthcare, infrastructure, and food security in Syria.

“An initial package has been allocated for humanitarian initiatives, particularly in the hospital and healthcare sector, as well as infrastructure and food supply chains,” Tajani stated.

He also revealed plans for new cooperation projects in the coming weeks and announced Italy’s intention to organize a business forum focused on Syria’s reconstruction.

International Support for Syria’s Transition

Syria has been undergoing a significant political shift after Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) seized power in December, overthrowing former President Bashar al-Assad.

Earlier this month, an EU-led donor conference resulted in a commitment of €5.8 billion to aid Syria’s new leadership in addressing post-conflict challenges. In addition, the European Union has lifted various sanctions on energy, banking, transport, and reconstruction, aiming to facilitate economic recovery.

Italy’s financial commitment underscores its support for Syria’s stabilization, as international actors work to rebuild the war-torn nation.
