A 17-year-old Polish student appeared in a Greek court on Monday, May 5, 2025, after being arrested for the killing of a 16-year-old girl in Poland. The student, who was in Greece as part of a school exchange program, refused to be sent back to Poland voluntarily, saying he was worried about his family’s safety. He is now in police custody while a court decides whether he should be extradited.

The victim, 16-year-old Maja Kowalska, was reported missing on April 23, 2025. Her body was found on May 1, 2025, near railroad tracks in Mława, Poland, after a week of searching. Police had used drones and scent-tracking dogs during the search. Maja had told her mother she was meeting a friend, but she never returned home.

The investigation revealed that the suspect, a 17-year-old boy, may have killed Maja with a hammer or an axe. He then tried to hide her body by burning it with a chemical and dumping it in a garbage bin. He also used her phone to mislead the police before throwing it near the railroad tracks.

The suspect could face murder charges under Polish law, even though he is a minor. Polish authorities have started the process to bring him back to Poland, where he will face the charges. The community in Mława is deeply upset by the tragic loss of Maja and is waiting for justice.
