Germany’s Chancellor Friedrich Merz is resetting relatons with Poland

May 8, Warsaw, Poland: The New German Chancellor, Friedrich Merz, met with Poland’s Prime Minister, Donald Tusk, on Wednesday at a press conference in Warsaw. In this press conference, the leaders discussed issues of migration. On this diplomatic tour, Friedrich Merz aimed at revitalizing European alliances and addressing pressing regional challenges. After he met with French President Emmanuel Macron in Paris, Merz traveled to Warsaw to engage with Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk, emphasizing the importance of strengthening Polish-German relations and reaffirming commitments to European unity.

In Warsaw, Merz and Tusk discussed a range of important critical issues, including border security, migration policies, and defense cooperation. Tusk highlighted the strategic significance of Poland’s eastern border, which serves as the face of potential threats from neighbouring Belarus and Russia. Merz’s visit underscores a concerted effort to reinvigorate the Weimar Triangle—a trilateral cooperation framework involving France, Germany, and Poland. Once a cornerstone of European diplomatic engagement, the Weimar Triangle has experienced periods of stagnation. However, recent geopolitical developments, including the shifting dynamics of U.S. foreign policy under former President Donald Trump, have prompted a renewed focus on strengthening intra-European alliances.

The establishment of “Weimar+” in February 2025 further reflects this strategic pivot. This expanded intergovernmental organization now includes the United Kingdom, aiming to enhance European sovereignty and address security concerns independently of U.S. influence. The group’s formation was a direct response to perceived exclusions from key discussions, such as the U.S.-Russia negotiations over Ukraine, which notably excluded European leaders.

In his discussions with Tusk, Merz reaffirmed Germany’s commitment to supporting Ukraine and enhancing European defense capabilities. He proposed initiating talks with France and the United Kingdom on nuclear deterrence, complementing NATO’s role and bolstering Europe’s strategic autonomy. Additionally, Merz and Macron announced the creation of a joint defense and security council to address strategic threats, particularly from Russia, and to reinforce European autonomy in security matters.
