From May 15 to 16, the European Centre for Modern Languages (ECML) held a special workshop in Graz, Austria. The event, called DeafSign, gathered experts and policy makers from 25 European countries. Their goal was to improve education for deaf learners, including those from refugee and immigrant backgrounds.
Participants shared results from a Europe-wide survey with over 160 responses. They discussed how to create better guidelines and resources for teaching sign language to children and adults. A key idea was to involve deaf-led organizations and experts from the start to ensure quality and inclusivity.
The DeafSign project runs from 2024 to 2027 and supports the ECML’s mission to promote language education that encourages democracy and inclusion. This initiative also connects with recent efforts to recognize sign languages officially across Europe.
The workshop marks an important step in making sign language education more accessible and effective for diverse communities. Stay tuned to Questiqa Europe News for more latest updates.
