France will implement the Entry/Exit System (EES) starting October 2025, joining other Schengen Area countries such as Germany, Italy, Spain, Greece, and Austria. This new border management system is designed to register travelers from non-European Union countries when entering and leaving the Schengen Zone.
Key Features of the Entry/Exit System (EES)
- Registration of biometric data, including fingerprints and facial images
- Recording of travel document information
- Logging of entry and exit dates in a centralized database accessible by all Schengen member states
Purpose and Benefits
The EES aims to:
- Enhance security by improving detection of overstayers and unauthorized stays
- Streamline border controls for faster and more efficient processing
- Improve the overall travel experience within the Schengen Area
Who is Affected?
The system applies to third-country nationals who:
- Require a visa or
- Are exempt from visa requirements for short stays (up to 90 days within a 180-day period)
Travelers should prepare to provide biometric data at the border and ensure their travel documents are valid to avoid delays.
Additional Information
- Airlines and travel agencies will provide updated information and assistance as the deployment date approaches
- The EES complements other EU initiatives, such as the European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS), which requires prior electronic travel authorization
France’s adoption of the EES marks a significant step in modernizing and securing border management across Europe. Starting October 2025, travelers can expect smoother and more secure crossings within the Schengen Area.
