At the Shangri-La Dialogue held in Singapore, French President Emmanuel Macron emphasized the critical need for an independent coalition between European and Asian countries. Speaking at the International Institute of Strategic Studies (IISS) annual event, Macron highlighted the importance of strategic autonomy in global affairs.
He urged nations to avoid becoming entangled in the escalating rivalry between the United States and China, advocating instead for a united front that operates independently of these major powers. Macron also issued a caution regarding the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, warning that allowing Russia to seize Ukrainian territory could set a dangerous precedent, potentially triggering similar territorial disputes in regions like Taiwan and the Philippines.
Despite his role as a European leader, Macron underscored France’s significant presence in the Indo-Pacific region, referring to its overseas territories and a maritime domain exceeding 8,000 kilometers. This presence strengthens France’s stake in regional security and cooperation.
The president’s call to action aims to build cooperative relationships among independent countries, focusing on fostering regional stability and security without aligning solely with major power blocs. This approach encourages collaboration based on mutual interests and autonomy.
