At the 2025 Shangri-La Dialogue held in Singapore, French President Emmanuel Macron emphasized the critical need for European and Asian countries to establish a coalition of independent nations. Speaking at the International Institute of Strategic Studies (IISS) annual event, Macron highlighted the importance of maintaining strategic autonomy amidst the prevailing influence of the United States and China.

Macron warned that countries should be cautious not to become entangled in the escalating US-China tensions. He expressed particular concern regarding Russia’s actions in Ukraine, stating that permitting Russia to annex Ukrainian territory could ignite similar disputes in other sensitive areas such as Taiwan and the Philippines.

Although France is primarily a European country, Macron underlined its significant role in the Indo-Pacific region due to its overseas territories and strategic interests there. His remarks underscored the urgency of adopting a balanced approach towards security and cooperation between Europe and Asia.

Macron called for a coalition that:

  • Acts independently without undue external influence,
  • Respects the sovereignty of all nations involved, and
  • Safeguards the strategic interests of smaller countries amid global power struggles.

This vision reflects the rapidly evolving geopolitical landscape, where global powers strive to assert influence, but it is equally important for smaller and mid-sized countries to protect their autonomy and strategic goals.
