On Saturday, Budapest witnessed a historic event as between 100,000 and 200,000 people took part in the 30th Budapest Pride march. The large crowd showed strong support for LGBTQ+ rights in Hungary’s capital. However, the event sparked controversy.
Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán called the Pride march “disgusting and shameful.” He also claimed that the march happened “on the orders of Brussels,” referring to the European Union’s influence. This statement highlights the ongoing political tension between Hungary’s government and the EU over LGBTQ+ issues and other matters.
Despite the Prime Minister’s criticism, the massive turnout demonstrated significant public backing for diversity and inclusion in Budapest. The annual Pride march remains a key platform for advocating equal rights and visibility for the LGBTQ+ community in Hungary amid a challenging political climate.
